In the US, the apple seems to be the most symbolic of well-being.
2 :
I'm pretty sure it's the pomagranate. The ruby red seeds represent wealth, fertility and longevity.
3 :
maybe wheat? i am not quite sure but this is my best guess. Or maybe the pomagranite. I know in some culture it represents life but i am not sure about the prosperity part of it.
4 :
the tomato. originally known as the love apple, a member of the nightshade family. the tomato has been shown to be very good for your health.
5 :
The tomato is the fruit you seek. Here are some clips to explain my answer! Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? The answer to this question is an interesting bit of tomato trivia. Technically a tomato is a fruit, since it is the ripened ovary of a plant. But in 1893 the supreme court ruled in the case of "NIX v. HEDDEN" tomatoes were to be considered vegetables. Why are tomatoes so valuable to the diet? Lycopene, a potent antioxidant found in tomatoes appears to offer a reduced risk of cancer. Lycopene is what gives tomatoes their red color. You may already know about earlier research linking lycopene with reduced risk to heart attack and prostate cancer in men. The beneficial link between reduced cancer risk and processed tomatoes is reported in a series of published articles appearing in the June 1998 "Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine". One study found that Mediterranean diets featuring tomato products were linked with lower risk of cancer and heart disease for people living and eating in that region of the world. Here's the point. A little lycopene can't hurt. And, because your body doesn't produce it, you have to consume the tomato products. A number of other studies, according to the Tomato Council, demonstrate that lycopene helps reduce more than just cancer. For example, Carlo La Vecchia at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy reported additional benefits in his study titled "Mediterranean Epidemiological Evidence on Tomatoes and the Prevention of Digestive-Tract Cancers"

are car payments and health and car insurance considered a utility when applying for food stamp benefits

are car payments and health and car insurance considered a utility when applying for food stamp benefits?
I am trying to apply for food stamps and am not sure if my car payment, car insurance, and health insurance count towards my utilities. I really need these stamps, until my employers can give me more work hours, so I want to give as much detailed information as possible on my food stamp application, without filling it our incorrectly. Also, do you know if receiving food stamps can potentially ruin your credit?

Utilities are things like electric, gas/oil, water, and possibly phone service.... Unfortunately, things like car payments and insurance are practical matters, but not usually considered part of the 'budget' - There are other factors that they consider in factoring in how much you get foodstamps; they will be taking a look at the amount of income you do have/bring in; how much you pay for your shelter costs; and from there, they decide the amount according to their scale, how much you get... I don't think food stamps would ruin your credit... I think not paying your bills effects your credit; fs are necessary when the funds are low... and should not count against you.... interesting question though... ask your case worker...
2 :
Utilities include electric, home heating gas, telephone.water and sewer.
3 :
None of those are considered utilities. Utilities are electric, oil, gas, phone, water and sewer. Getting food stamps cannot ruin your credit.
4 :
Utilities are gas, telephone, water, sewer, and electricity, things that are connected to your house. Sounds like you are wanting food stamps whether or not you meet the qualifications for them

2 :
well there not for me - Scientific evidence and facts Production of unnatural molecules is inevitable. Naturally occurring amino acids have been observed to undergo isomeric changes (changes in shape morphing) as well as transformation into toxic forms, under the impact of microwaves produced in ovens. One short-term study found significant and disturbing changes in the blood of individuals consuming microwaved milk and vegetables. Eight volunteers ate various combinations of the same foods cooked different ways. All foods that were processed through the microwave ovens caused changes in the blood of the volunteers. Hemoglobin levels decreased and over all white cell levels and cholesterol levels increased. Lymphocytes decreased. Luminescent (light-emitting) bacteria were employed to detect energetic changes in the blood. Significant increases were found in the luminescence of these bacteria when exposed to blood serum obtained after the consumption of microwaved food." The Swiss clinical study Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel, who is now retired, worked as a food scientist for many years with one of the major Swiss food companies that do business on a global scale. A few years ago, he was fired from his job for questioning certain processing procedures that denatured the food. In 1991, he and a Lausanne University professor published a research paper indicating that food cooked in microwave ovens could pose a greater risk to health than food cooked by conventional means. An article also appeared in issue 19 of the Journal Franz Weber in which it was stated that the consumption of food cooked in microwave ovens had cancerous effects on the blood. The research paper itself followed the article. On the cover of the magazine there was a picture of the Grim Reaper holding a microwave oven in one of his hands. Dr. Hertel was the first scientist to conceive and carry out a quality clinical study on the effects microwaved nutrients have on the blood and physiology of the human body. His small but well controlled study showed the degenerative force produced in microwave ovens and the food processed in them. The scientific conclusion showed that microwave cooking changed the nutrients in the food; and, changes took place in the participants' blood that could cause deterioration in the human system. Hertel's scientific study was done along with Dr. Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Institute for Biochemistry

Which is the Bigger Death Panel Tea Baggers cutting Welfare for food and water or Obama Health plan

Which is the Bigger Death Panel Tea Baggers cutting Welfare for food and water or Obama Health plan?
Which one is a bigger death panel taking away food stamps an welfare for families in need or giving everyone in america health care so they can't be denied?
Politics - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
wow,do you have a link where the tea party took away food stamps.and when congress passes a law i would like it to be constitutional.
2 :
we should have a death panel for wall street..............
3 :
Cutting social income. To add insult to injury they seek to do this while throwing working americans(no, not just union workers) under the bus so even more money filters to the top.
4 :
The republicans haven't taken away food stamps, Obama did. Do your research and you'll find that Obama took billions away from the food stamp program to give to his buddies in the teacher's union.
5 :
And by "giving everyone in America health care" you're talking about the largest insurance premium increase in history, the largest co-pay increase in history and the largest reduction in health care benefits in history? Not to mention the elimination of consumer choice and degradation of service. Yeah.. it's such a wonderful thing..
6 :
"Giving everyone healthcare?" You mean FORCING me to buy (now more expensive) healthcare? Tea Party-ers are lunatics, but I'm pretty sure no one was talking about eliminating food stamps. Now, if we required drug testing before handing out those food stamps... that WOULD be a death panel.
7 :
Whats the point of drawing a comparison? The Conservatives answer to cutbacks in welfare is that the recipients are all lazy, don't deserve help and all should be dead while their answer to Health Care reform is that Americans shouldn't get sick (based simply on the fact that we're Americans and are too awesome to get sick) but if you DO get sick, its because you're lazy and you should die quick hereby cleansing the gene pool of your laziness. Either way it seems like a win win situation for Republicans (at least until something unfortunate happens to one of them then they conveniently switch parties to Democrat.)
8 :
We can not afford this Government run Health care control. Obama has milked China to death and we owe out the kazoo so where is the money going to come from? Many have no jobs because Obama has done everything in his power to hurt business in this country. We would not have to worry about food stamps and welfare if people had jobs. But the Stimulus for shovel ready jobs went where? To pay off his buddies and his connections. He doesn't give a rats azz about you.
9 :
It's so easy to be on welfare/food stamps - you can have a huge income in some states and still legally collect food stamps. Food stamps program needs cut back

Should people that eat excess mounts of junk food be denied Social/Universal Health Care

Should people that eat excess mounts of junk food be denied Social/Universal Health Care?
I think that in exchange for the Liberals that want to force Universal Health Care taxes upon us we should somehow be able to prohibit people that eat junk food from accessing it. In order to be eligible you shall NOT: - Smoke - Drink Alcohol - Consume Junk Food You force us and we force you. Deal?
Politics - 11 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I think Obama will just overtax anyone that consumes too much. Just like he plans to overtax energy companies, enough to make them go bankrupt. Seems plausible.
2 :
Even better, lets tax all of those things so that the economic incentives are properly aligned and the externalities are internalized. Most countries already do that with alcohol and tobacco. The tax revenue can help pay for treatment of obesity, lung cancer, heart disease, etc.
3 :
Liberals have already tried to sue fast-food companies over obesity because they don't believe adults are responsible for their own behavior. It's the same reason liberals were behind Prohibition and trying to ban rock and hip-hop and violent video games, as well as fighting against cigarettes. The liberal nanny state is a fascist state.
4 :
Let's also deny it to people who don't exercise, or who have risky jobs, or who live in polluted cities, or who drive fast, or who live in a dangerous neighborhood. All of those are personal choices as well. You see how silly you sound? Edit: re the above post that "liberals were behind Prohibition," it was sponsored by REPUBLICAN Andrew Volstead. The Volstead Act was vetoed by DEMOCRAT Woodrow Wilson, but his veto was overriden by the REPUBLICAN Congress. I'm just sayin...
5 :
Maybe, but do you really wish to deplete membership in your party by that much?
6 :
Do you think it matters to the bacteria or viruses that people are infected with, whether or not you have better health habits than the person who doesn't, when you touch something they contaminated? Do you realize smog and air pollution from driving your car also compromises your immune system? Does it matter to a health care provider that loses money form people who can't afford to pay their bills, what your healthy habits are when they pass the cost onto you? You people are so stuck on the ME ME ME mentality, you are cutting your own throats.
7 :
I think your question is premature. No one has forced you into anything as of yet.
8 :
Do you know what single-payer means? Nobody is touting "universal health care taxes" on anyone. Ok, but since you guys want to ban gay marriage, can we ban "crosses" from public? I don't want my kid to be indoctrinated with crosses. So nobody is allowed to wear or display a cross in public. fair is fair right? Here's a tip...read other books besides the "pop-up" books to gain an understanding of the world.
9 :
no one should be excluded but people should recognize things are just not good for you. There are a few ways to address this issue. We can handle it from the product side and start taxing companies that make junk food more for their products that are against the public as a whole. We can also make those who constantly consume these products pay more tax for what they spend. Now the later solution is more wrong but the first one makes more sense. If the public as a whole was to vote on whether or not they want to start eating food that is healthy and no longer want to buy foods that are junk, then this could be easily done. Companies would then have to change. However, I do think that everyone regardless should have access easily to health care even if it is universal. I think if you give the public food that is healthier but still tastes great, they will accept it with open arms but companies do not do that. And that is the reason for many things.
10 :
sounds like socialism tell you what you can and can't do this what we all voted for change

Has the Obama administration learned about the health effects of sewage sludge on food crops

Has the Obama administration learned about the health effects of sewage sludge on food crops?
Michelle Obama tried to grow a vegetable garden, but found there had been sewage sludge used as fertilizer during the Clinton Administration. The National Parks Service tested the sludge and found lead in it. The same kind of sewage sludge is used extensively as agricultural fertilizer. A lot of people protest this, including neighbors due to the run-off. Why haven't the scientists and administrators of the EPA and HHS determined that this is not healthy and prohibited the practice. Instead, we see people and communities engaged in court battles to stop the practice, and local Departments of Environmental Protection and state politicians supporting the polluters. How much more will using sewage sludge on food increase U.S. morbidity and the cost of health care?
Current Events - 3 Answers

Whether the Obama's learned anything or not and the EPA and HHS aside: Where is the Food and Drug Administration? Although this may be an environmental problem, why isn't the Food and Drug Administration protecting us and our children from this potentially destructive lead laced food? Lead in the diet of an infant or young child can be extremely destructive to the child's brain development. Never forget that home grown vegetables are better for you and are more nutritious and with the coming collapse of the economy...you should know how to grow your own. Big multinational agribusiness (Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, Cargill (twice the size of ADM) and others) has a huge lobbying effort to keep their activities hidden and approved by our POLITICIANS! The huge multinational chemical and fertilizer companies (Agrium, Bunge Limited, CF Industries, Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, Israel Chemicals, Kemira GrowHow, Kempthorne Prosser, National Fertilisers Limited, Office Chérifien des Phosphates, Petronas Fertilizer Kedah PhosAgro, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Qinghai Salt Lake Potash, Sinofert Holdings, Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile, The Mosaic Company, Yara International) also lobby extensively in Washington and our CongressPeople suck up the attention and money offered by them to keep the Agribusiness out of the public eye and unregulated.
2 :
They found lead (Pb) in the sewage sludge --- but that in and of itself will not put lead in any of the crops grown in it. I do not know of any plant that metabolizes lead (Pb). Is there a botanist out there who knows about lead in green plants. Is this another the sky is falling Environmental FUD alert? Okay, I did find some an article on lead and green onions - I'll need to read it closely.
3 :
I think they found minuscule amounts of sewage sludge in there. However, I do agree with you that they're better off using cow patties for fertilizer. Moreover, I think sewage sludge is better off as "fecal fuel" for electricity

I have a question about expired food & health

I have a question about expired food & health?
I didn't look at the expiration date on the milk carton until I'd drank a glass of it. I noticed it tasted a little funny, but thought it was maybe me. Should I be worried about getting sick or anything? Also, should I contact my doctor?
Other - Health - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You'll be fine - no need to contact your doctor. Sour milk is actually used in some recipes.
2 :
no need to contact a doctor. if the milk was so bad you needed to call your doctor, you wouldnt have been able to open the bottle cap. you should be fine.
3 :
Whatever doesn't kill you can only make you stronger. :) It's not a significant concern - you might get mild food poisoning such as upset stomach or diarrhea. Some Pepto Bismal or similar will help smooth things through. Your doctor will recommend as such if you contact him/her.
4 :
Milk that's a little sour wont hurt you, it just doesnt taste as good. Many foods that have the "best by" dates are just there for stock rotation by the store. Soda pop, coffee, soup and other canned goods are ok even years after the date unless there is leakage. I have personally opened canned coffee that has been from my parents basement and is 15 years old. It still brews fine and tastes the same as fresh folgers. Of course now a lot a these foods are packaged in plastic, rather than cans which does not hold the taste as well because plastic is more permable to air. (lets air in more easily)
5 :
most of the food have expiry date beyond the date printed on their packing....it's the requirement by the health dept....mostly they can last for another 6 to 12 months depending on the product itself.... however for milk or dairy products, it's crucial to ensure that the product is fresh and not expired before consuming them. even at times the product will be spoiled before the expiry date if it's not being kept properly or exposed to contamination after opening....if the milk or dairy product tasted funny (sour or smelly)...you should throw it away. if you happen to consume part of it, don't worry too much as it's not that "poisonous" to kill you...most probably you will just have some upset stomach for a day or so....you can see a doctor if you are worried about it.
6 :
If it tasted a little funny, you should be fine. When it is undrinkable, then you should contact your doctor

absolutely yes. i also think food stamps should be in the form of the WIC program. the WIC program defines the appropriate foods and amount of the appropriate foods per person it covers in a month. EXAMPLE: X number of gallons of milk; X number of boxes of approved cereal; X number of cartons of eggs... etc...

yes...and... produce certified copies of birth certificates and or immigration papers a tax Id # . NO stamps (or other state/Fed subsidized services) until the STATE issuing the Food Stamps has received a response from ALL states, territories and agencies that tracks(taxes) Americans living abroad. Too many dead people receive stuff and vote. Did you know that there is NO electronic data base for birth death records?? (states 4 yrs have gotten Fed $ to convert their records but legislatures tend to redirect the funds ) ....So John Q dies in TX..gets a death certificate from TX..but he was born in OH -->Texas does NOT notify OH ...Since OH still thinks John Q is alive , any "request for the birth certificate is just a small fee. Mike dies -his spouse fails to notify who ever is sending his retirement/pension/benefit check... ...ID theft is bug business..many victims only find out when they get billed, or told that they have maxed out on their health caps..etc Food stamps were originally designed to be a temp help for those struggling to find employment . Over the years it has morphed into a program that is easily manipulated.( work a few weeks/stop showing up get "fired" apply for workman's comp, food stamps ..etc I dont think people especially kids should go hungry but the system needs to be cleaned up !

some have msg in it and it get's you adicted to it.....so if it contains msg then it is bad...so be care full enjoy ur food
3 :
If it is chinese food that wasnt made in china its usually not authentic or healthy! =\
4 :
unfortunely yes. take awayz are bad in general, so it maybe be an idea to try and make your own, or swap fried for boiled rice and veg dishes instead of chicken
5 :
Check out if they put MSG in it. The Chinese seem to well on it. Learn who to cook your own.
6 :
I don't believe there are any "bad" food, there are only bad life styles. Most Chinese are skinny, because they eat lean, and they don't drive cars. they use bikes. Chinese can gain some weight when they start driving. or eat food has lots of fat/oil. real Chinese food shouldn't have lots of oil/grease. go to 24 hours often, you can eat whatever you want. MSG is a nature element, just like sugar and salt. you can find MSG in lots of food, sea weed, tomatoes,......
7 :
Well, some of it contains MSG
8 :
its becuase u r eating the fried stuff if u just ate the chinese vegetables and white rice it would be better
9 :
It would be unhealthy with or without msg. It depends on what you eat. Something healthy that i can think of is steamed fish. Try that instead of fried food.
10 :
Food that comes from Chinese takeaways is bad for you if it is deep-fried, smothered in sauces, or prepared with too much salt. You can eat Chinese food three times a week and still be healthy, if you just stick to a few guidelines: -don't order anything deep-fried (too much fat) -avoid fried rice (it's day-old rice that's been re-cooked in chicken fat and soy sauce--not good for you) -don't order duck or those disgusting yellow noodles (both are oily beyond belief) -if brown rice is on the menu, choose that over white rice (more fiber and fewer calories) -order vegetarian dishes over meat dishes (even if they're both cooked in oil, tofu has a lot less calories than beef and chicken) -if steamed vegetables are offered, eat those (lots of vitamins and very few calories) -try the soups (most Chinese soups are delicious and fairly low in calories) And don't listen to the people who say that MSG is bad for you. If you have very high blood pressure, then you shouldn't eat a lot of salt, and that includes MSG. If you don't, there's no harm in eating MSG (some people claim to get headaches after eating it, but no studies actually show that there is a link between the two). So, you can enjoy your Chinese food, but don't overdo it, lol.
11 :
They cook alot of vergetables, but it depends what you eat, as to how healthy it is for you.
12 :
I love that food to cant get enough of it........lol
13 :
no. or why more than 1 billion chinese live in the world??
14 :
It's just a matter of making better choices: steamed plain rice over fried rice, more tofu & veggies over meats, more steamed & boiled dishes over deep-fried stuff etc. The chicken pieces in many American-Chinese chicken dishes are deep-fried first and then heavy sauces (with lots of salt & sugar) are added, very unhealthy. The best thing is to learn to cook your own Chinese food from authentic recipes, so you can control the amount of salt, sugar & oil used. For those people who tend to put on weight, often it's not just due to eating a particular type of food but their entire food intake is in question. Common culprits are love of junk food & fast food, pampering a sweet tooth, lots of unhealthy snacks between meals, lots of carbonated sweet drinks instead of water, love of deep-fried stuff, too much meat & saturated fats, avoidance of fruits & veggies, eating way too much and little to no exercise.
15 :
Chinese food in China is very healthy, but the things they call Chinese in America tend to be salty, greasy, and deep-fried. So yes, it's pretty bad for you. Try sticking to stir-fries and things with lots of vegetables. Seafood is fine, but avoid pork. Brown steamed rice is better than fried.
16 :
chinese food in general is not bad for your health. If you eat homemade one's without all that msg it's actually healthy in my opinion. Try to eat the food with more portions of veggies and greens instead of more meat. It'll balance out. Too much of any food is bad.
17 :
Not necessarily -- there are so many different styles and subcategories of Chinese food. However, fried rice noodles or chili chicken are definitely bad for your health. Stay away from greasy and spicy food. Chinese or otherwise, they're just unhealthy in general

What is a good book that discusses what to buy at a Health Food Store

What is a good book that discusses what to buy at a Health Food Store?

"Prescription For Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis & James Balch. Excellent book!
2 :
I agree with Sawyer, that is one of the best books. I have used it extensively.

I am new at the health food market and am going to check out the book that was suggested below for myself also. I wanted to write though to let you know I found a couple of books made by the health food store itself that offered tips and lots of information on how to choose products and what their main uses were. You may be able to find something similar at your health food store. I went in with a list of things that my father's doctor recommended and I had never heard of more than half of them. I found the people to be very helpful and friendly. And like I said, in the different sections there was books that provided information - the most helpful was in the veggies section. They also have an encyclopedia of herbs and remedies that I was able to reference right there. Someone in an earlier question I read also recommended a book called Back to Eden to get good descriptions on herbs and other natural products (I ordered if from Amazon but I haven't seen it yet so I can't vouch for it). Good luck, I look forward to learning more on this topic with the other replies you receive. D

What are some similarities and differences between Food Critics and Health Inspectors

What are some similarities and differences between Food Critics and Health Inspectors?
I know they are very different when it comes to judging food, but what are those differences and do they have anything else in common?

A food critic would be focusing on a few things like: the quality & origin of the ingredients used to create the meal, the overall taste, the overall visual presentation, quality of service, the value in pricing schemes, infomation on who cooked the food (the chef)...their previous food experience & work related history, comparisons & contrasts to other similar restaurants. They give you the "lowdown" on your entire dining experience at a given restaurant establishment. Conversely, a Health/Food Inspector ensures that the restaurant establishment is handling the food in accordance to the standards established by City/State Laws. They check things like: the cleanliness of the restaurant, the certification/food handlers permits of the staff, temperature readings of the freezers, the fridge and the "food holding areas" (like steam tables), they check for pest problems (ants, mice, roaches, rats), proper food storage facilities/proper temperatures/expiration dates on ingredients, etc... Health/Food Inspectors are not concerned about how the food tastes, how it is priced, where the chefs learned their culinary skills, how the food is presented. They focus on the overall risk to the health and safety of the patrons...preventing food borne illnesses. Hope this info helps.
2 :
They can both close a restaurant down overnight with the bad report

Which is more important health care or Food and Drug Administration?
Since our health care system is doing just fine as it is should we privatize our FDA so private investment groups can benefit?

As has been consistently shown over the course of human history, it is almost always worse (less efficient and more costly) to have an impersonal, unaccountantable bureaucracy running something compared the same work being done by someone with who can profit or lose depending on how good (or bad) a job they do. I don't understand why you find this concept so hard to grasp

Could someone give me two food labels, one with a health claim

Could someone give me two food labels, one with a health claim?
I need to find two food labels to compare for an assignment. I need one that has a health claim, but I don't have a label like that at home. I need an answer ASAP. Some either find a link or links that include two labels total or scan two food labels. A best answer will be awarded to the person who gets me two usable food labels first. Ready, set, go!

Can a new resident in Phoenix, AZ qualify for food stamps and health insurance right away

Can a new resident in Phoenix, AZ qualify for food stamps and health insurance right away?
I am moving to Arizona, Phoenix and need health insurance and public assistance right away. Is there a waiting period to qualify? Thank you for your help.

Sure you can apply right away, if you have a case open in another state you will need to close it. Don't worry they have to give you 10 day notice so in most cases you end up getting your assistance for an extra month from the old state. The new state will need to verify that your case is closed in the old state, so you can get a letter from the old state or the new state can call your worker in the old state. You can only get food stamps, Tanf, and child care in one state at a time. So if you had food stamps in your old state in August then Arizona wont issue you more until September, but don't wait to apply because it can take a few weeks to be approved and you don't want a delay in benefits. You can have medicaid in two states at the same time because usually medicaid in one state wont pay for medical treatment in another.

what are the health benefits of eating alot of spicy food

I eat alot of spicy food... and i barely break a sweat! earlier i made a quesadilla and put 12 red peppers inside of it...sprinkled a bunch of cayanne pepper powder and put habanero slices in it...i didnt even grab for a cup of water hahaha ' i think i read somewhere that eating spicy foods speeds up metabolism and helps someone live longer...are these true? if so what other health benefits are there?

I don't know about the just spicy food, as a flavor, but a lot of spicy foods contain a lot of vitamin C.
2 :
it's reported to improve blood flow as well, which can have all over benefits from stopping heart attacks to making you think faster.
3 :
Peppers contain tons of vitamin C, maybe that's why they are considered to be very healthy and may make you 'live longer.' I can eat a teaspoon full of wasabi without crying... but there is a way to do that hehe. I love spicy food too... but you have to be careful if you have ulcers or hyper acidity.
4 :
That's an excellent question :) The medicinal benefits have been studied for years. Foods with high levels of capsaicin help with digestion and you will be left with a squeaky clean bowel. As for longevity, studies show that spicy-food-eating people tend to live 17% longer on average
