Why is everyone so health food crazy

Why is everyone so health food crazy?
I understand that the US is high on child obesity and that everyone should eat well, children should be active and fed nutritious foods. It just seems all the fun of childhood has been sucked right out of life. Whats so wrong with letting your child have a candy bar or a cupcake every now and then?

honestly, i'm not a big fan of fatty foods. When i was little, i ate like crazy, but played outside all the time, yet i still got a little pudge. I lost it by the age of 9 however (it really wasn't that noticeable). Still, however, I try not to eat so much because nobody wants to get fat.

I tend to agree with you that we sometimes get too excited. I actually volunteer at a local Boys and Girls Club and it's interesting to see how excited the kids get about snacks. My theory is that control food too much, leads kids to overeat when given the opportunity. As you sort of alluded to, a treat here or there does no harm and allows kids to experience a balance between being "good" and having a treat.
3 :
there's nothing wrong with the occasional treat. Honestly, I think a lot of people lie about what they feed their kids, since no one can call them on it. Ive never met a parent who actully fed their kids only organic, all soy, compltely vegan, and never allowed a crumb of chocolate, or God forbid, a french fry touch thier child's lips. My son had animal crackers and yogurt with m&m's today. among other things of course.
4 :
I don't think anyone saying having a cupcake or candy every now and then is a bad thing. It's constantly all the time. You don't want your kids eating to much sweats because they can get cavities, they can lose their teeth, they can get diabetes and oh yes obesity and so so so much more! So I guess to answer your question, I want my kids to eat well all the time, so they can.... I don't know, live longer!!!! I make healthy foods fun for my kids. Healthy food don't have to be boring or not fun.
5 :
There's nothing wrong with a treat every so often. But that's not how the US does it. It's every so often every day. Besides, fresh, homemade, garden grown food tastes so much better. Once you start eating that way you won't be able to go back.

Make it yourself. Start researching here: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=homemade+dog+food&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
2 :
Canidae: http://www.canidae.com Innova/California Natural (other foods on the site) http://www.naturapet.com Timberwolf Organics: http://www.timberwolforganics.com Solid Gold: http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/ Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul: http://chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/ Here is a list of the Top Ten Dog Foods: http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/toptenfoods.html You sound like you know what to stay away from, which is Science Diet, IAMS, Eukanuba, Purina, etc etc And Yes! With a good quality food you WILL get less poo! LOL I noticed that big time w/ my 2 dogs, I got worried and took them to the vet and he said that since they are getting a good quality food, they wont poo that much. I feed my 2 dogs Innova dry and wet mixed. Just look through those foods to see which one fits your budget! You can also shop around at different health food stores that sell dog food to get a good price. Hope that helps and Good job for researching!

By Nature, is the brand that I adore right now. Here are the top ingredients in their adult food: - Chicken Meal, Ground Barley, Ground Oats, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (Stabilized with Mixed Tocopherols), Lamb Meal, Chicken http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/
4 :
in truth all dog foods have byproducts in them, chemicals and the such. in some part of manufacturing it, it will get in there. the best is to feed them what we know as 'human food', though human food is real food, my doberman eats nothing but boiled chicken, fish, liver, and the such. also, corn is not easily digestable, causes fur problems, and in truth, it causes the same problems in people too
5 :
Our dogs are 10 - 12 years old and very healthy. They eat Alpo Prime Cuts and love it.
6 :
A good name brand, if home made dog foods were so good, then why dont they market it and make a ton of money? Nuff said.....
7 :
Dog food isn't going to minimize shedding. Brushing them everyday and only bathing them 4 times per year will help the shedding. There are no "cost effective" (cheap) dog foods that are healthy for them. You get what you pay for when it comes to dogs and their food. Look for Solid Gold, Canidae, Innova and California Natural in the pet store and get either of those brands. Very healthy and nutritious but can be expensive.

I'm a veterinary technician at a local pet clinic. Maybe I can help! I recommend feeding your dogs homemade foods. Sweet potatoes, chicken, and rice are very heatlhy for dogs. I recommend going to walmart and buying a huge bag of those chicken wings/legs for 5 bucks and baking them in the oven with the sweet potatoes and rice. When its done cooking though, take the chicken off the bones. Chicken bones are bad for dogs. And give each dog a bowl-ful of the mixed ingredients once a day. Not only is this pretty cheap, but it will keep your dogs coat shinier, less shedding, less hunger, and you can save the cooked chicken up to 3 days in the fridge. Or, if you don't want to do this...the best brands are Science Diet (expensive but very healthy) or Purina One (10 lb bag $16.00) and its pretty healthy. Good luck!
9 :
The better quality (and usually more expensive) the food the less they will need to eat. The cost usually evens out in the end - for example you buy a bag for $40 and they eat 1 cup a day or you buy a bag for $10 and they will need to eat 4 cups a day to get the same out of it. More poop and same amount of money. It's not best for dogs to not have any animal byproducts. They are carnivores. If you plan for a vegetarian diet you really need to make sure your vet is okay and that they are taking suppliments to get everything they need. I myself am a vegetarian and not against it, so if your vet okays it, go for it. Here's a site I found on goodsearch.

Natural Balance is great. Also, Purina One. It's not a premium food but my coworker feeds it to her dogs and now recommends it to everyone. Her one dog has horrible allergies and has been doing great on this food. Her other dog is a picky eater and this is the only food he likes to eat.

I have a mix chow and german sheperd. He is six months old. I feed him Natural Choice he has a healthy skin and shiny coat.People alway asked me how do I get his fur to shine. Its his food. For twenty pound bag it cost 24.99 of course they have smaller bag.they have dry food and wet food.I give him dry food. For older dog they have Ultra and Max for adult.I shop at petsmart or I go to the pet wharehouse.I cannot find this food at a grocery certain stores only sell this food. they also put out for the dogs treats bones and other items in their brand name ata costly price. Its well worth it. Good Luck
13 :
Try the Canidae.. Not an expensive food, but has no wheat, corn, fillers, is human grade, naturally preserved, no animal by products, and more... They eat FAR less, I was stunned how much less the dogs ate and still got all the nutrition they needed.. FAR less poop.. even more shocking when you go to clean up the yard.. I was also very pleased when it came to shedding. This was a bad year for shedding no matter the breed.. Weird weather etc.. Our guys really shed alot, within a week of feeding the Canidae, it was down to nearly nothing again. Forget Iams, Beneful, All Purina, Eukanuba, Kibbles n Bits, Ol Roy, Pedigree, Science Diet etc.. They are all garbage foods that are preserved with cancer causing BHA/BHT or ethoxyquin, or cancer causing dyes, or use a Synthetic Vitamin K which makes the body not be able to normally use K from other sources. Horrible foods.. Some of them have sugars that your dog gets hooked on, making you feel like he loves the food, and it's a horrible addiction to something that is dangerous and causes diabetes Good Quality dogfood, might seem like it costs more but they actually eat far less and get their nutrition easier from the quality foods.

One food that hasn't been mentioned yet is Orijen. A friend of mine recommended it as the next best thing to feeding raw (which I'm unwilling to do). Here's the science and rationale behind the food: http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/documents/ORIJEN_White_paper.pdf Here are the reviews of the food by people that have used it: http://www.rateitall.com/i-949636-orijen.aspx And I bought my first bag from www.k9cuisine.com, which hass free shipping. It hasn't arrived yet, so I don't know yet how my girls will take to it. I thought it was really expensive at first, but since I'll be feeding about half as much as I do of Eukanuba (what they've been on for several years), it turns out its about the same price

What is a good home remedy or health food store remedy for chronic post nasal drip that causes a cough

What is a good home remedy or health food store remedy for chronic post nasal drip that causes a cough?

Hi sis Camille, I have got this issue too. I dont know about coughing but sure it is quite distracting. You can always buy a nasal inhaler or something from the chemist if you arent allergic to this modern chemicals. But im sure they have something more natural in the health food store which is more like some remedies that strengthen the actual body than a quick fix. For what I do when i have nasal drip, i usually tilt my head facing the roof, and cover one of nostrils and blow, this way it has more space when you blow. This is what i've read around anyways. Also drinking a tablespoon/teaspoon (depends how much you can handle) can help ease the throat. Drink water after though coz it burns a bit... God Bless Frank

Mediterranean countries is not clear. You will have to specify which countries you mean. The ones which are part of the EU or EEC will come under European legislation but each country will have its own ways of implementing this.

Why is taking exercise before food best to health and exercise after food adversely affect health

Why is taking exercise before food best to health and exercise after food adversely affect health?
I heard from everyone that "take exercise before taking food. It is good to health. But taking exercise after food adversely affect health" Why? Answers 1 and 3 are not good. Answer to the question please.

You can exercise whenever you want too. I would advise not to workout at least 1-2 hours after eating because you don't want to get sick!
2 :
If you eat before you exercise, blood that would be supplying your muscles with oxygen will be also trying to supply your digestive system with oxygen to help digest the food. You will be more likely to cramp up, get indigestion, or other issues

Good health food store in Portland

Good health food store in Portland?
I am going to Portland, Oregon from Australia for a visit in a week or so. I need to know where a good health food store near the airport is. I need to buy Swedish Bitters, as well as high dose calcium and Vit D. Thanks!

Near the airport? That's tough...there really aren't any..I work out there. There are TONS of health food stores in town, but the airport isn't really close to much...New Seasons is the best health food store in town...after that, there is Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and many independent places. Just about every Fred Meyer store has a good health food section with a good selection of vitamins. There is one on NE 102nd ave. 111 NE 102nd Ave...it may be your best bet for near the airport. Otherwise, go into town or think about bringing those things with you

2000 calories of health food vs junk food in a day

2000 calories of health food vs junk food in a day?
I have been wondering for quite some time, and it's a very silly question, but if you ate say, 2000 calories worth of chips and ice cream in a day, versus 2000 calories of veggies, bread, dairy products, and meat, would you gain weight? And how bad for you would it be? It would be the same caloric value, I guess just not the same nutritional value. I know it definately wouldn't be good for you. :P

1 :
You would be getting 2000 calories but your fat -protein-carbs ratio would be way of.. you would probably get way to many carbs and gain weight from that.

2 :
I'd be worried about my Sodium (salt) levels.
3 :
the response from feeding has a totally different effect when whole foods are consumed vs. junk foods. every time you eat the levels of various hormones (insulin, cortisol, glucagon, etc.) change. whole foods have a very profound positive effect on the endocrine system after feeding while heavily processed foods have the exact opposite effect. there is so much more to losing body fat and gaining muscle than simply cals in vs. cals out. then you have to take into account the actual bioavailability of those nutrients. whole foods contain various natural enzymes that allow the body to properly utilize the nutrients that they contain, processed foods do not. just because a package of food says it contains a bunch of vitamins and minerals does not mean that those nutrients can be utilized by the body efficiently. many foods are also comprised of macronutrients in amounts that are found no where in nature. take for example a candy bar that contains a high amount of simple sugars and a high amount of fat. there is no naturally occurring food that contains a high amount of sugar and fat, that tells you something and that it's not meant to be. take the avocado its one of the highest fat fruits found and has a decent amount of carbs in it but most if it is fiber. so when you break down the nutrients it comes out to: 1 cup: 5 grams protein 23 grams fat 18 grams carbs (13 grams fiber) the net carbs are only 5 * the less processed foods in the diet the healthier and leaner you will be. there is nothing healthy about them at all. mass amounts of various chemicals in foods are the main cause of the decline in health that is being seen in industrialized societies today.
4 :
You should know that calories re all the same..from no matter what source you may take them. The healthy food is another issue here and it concerns other aspects of your health and other complications. But if you want to know more about weight loss I am inviting you to my weight loss journal: http://www.myhealth-forum.com/ . Hope it'll help

Where can i find chelation therapy? My local health food stores and pharmacys dont have it?
I was exposed to arsenic poisoning and my doctor doesnt know much about it. Is there any other type of cure?!

Exposure and actual intake of a material though are interrelated but are not quantitatively uniform in determination of actual amount of the material in the body. It is better for you to have your blood levels tested, hair and nails tested and also a blood smear examined by a competent lab and or university medical center which your doctor can refer you to. It is very important to be sure of the diagnoses as there is no medicine which may not have side effects, including ch- elation therapy, please consult with your doctor

2 :
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has published guidelines for treatment, including chelation therapy. http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/arsenic/treatment_management.html
