Blood Sugar-Lowering Effects The higher the intake of onion, the lower the level of glucose found during oral or intravenous glucose tolerance tests. In addition, onions are a very good source of chromium, the mineral component in glucose tolerance factor, a molecule that helps cells respond appropriately to insulin. Cardiovascular Benefits The regular consumption of onions has, like garlic, been shown to lower high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, both of which help prevent atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. These beneficial effects are likely due to onions' sulfur compounds, its chromium and its vitamin B6, which helps prevent heart disease by lowering high homocysteine levels, another significant risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Gastrointestinal Health The regular consumption of onions, as little as two or more times per week, is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing colon cancer. Onions contain a number of flavonoids, the most studied of which, quercitin, has been shown to halt the growth of tumors in animals and to protect colon cells from the damaging effects of certain cancer-causing substances. Boost Bone Health Onions may be especially beneficial for women, who are at increased risk for osteoporosis as they go through menopause. Milk isn't the only food that boosts bone health. Onions also help maintain healthy bones, suggests a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. For a breakdown of nutrients in an onion follow the link. Potential negative side effects of eating onions: onion breath.

Duh... Of course organic is better. My question is... What the heck were you feeding your 2 yr old to give him high cholesterol? I swear, people these days have no common sense! Stop being lazy and cook something healthy that doesn't require a microwave.
2 :
Organic food is always going to be healthier and more nutritious than processed food. Number one, organic is natural and doesn't have any extra additives in it such as MSG, high fructose corn syrup, trans fat, etc. It may be more expensive, but if health is your concern, and based on your situation, then I would go organic. I don't necessarily know if organic food is guaranteed to reduce cholesterol, but I do understand that you will be better off eating it than processed food. I hope this helps!
3 :
No, not any better than non-organic. High cholesterol at age 2? Wonder why anyone would even check his cholesterol at that age? Unless heart attacks are common in your family, I would forget it. Having high cholesterol is not necessarily a health risk. It is for some, but is harmless for others. "Organic food" is a myth. It is a sales gimmick, nothing more.
4 :
I'm not sure how much of a difference organic food would make. But a vegetarian diet may be highly beneficial. "You should eat more foods from plants which don’t contain cholesterol such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and avoid foods that contain too much cholesterol like meat, egg yolks and fat milk." I understand your child may be too young for drugs. Check the sources below for natural ways to lower cholesterol.
5 :
I have to say i agree with JOHN S. just cook him some home cooked meals, and plenty of fruits and vegetables he should be fine.
6 :
In general, organic food isn't going to show much of a difference if he's eating too much fat and sugar. It's like how people who are suddenly diagnosed with a food intolerance like wheat or dairy will eat nothing but gluten free/dairy free foods and wonder why they start gaining weight (personal experience). Cut back on his saturated fat and sugar intake and start feeding him more vegetables. Consider cooking foods with whole, mostly unprocessed oils (extra-virgin) and start using vegetables and fruits as a snack instead of cheerios and crackers (just examples). Also, consider feeding him an apple a few times a day. Apples have soluble fiber (lots of it) and are great kid food. Oatmeal (not instant!) is another great option. I make mine with a bit of all-natural maple syrup. My nephew will only eat oatmeal if it has hot coco powder in it (small price if he eats it). Provided it's not instant oatmeal, because most of the nutrients have been cooked out, oatmeal is healthy enough that you can add quite a bit of sugar to it and not have to worry about it being unhealthy.
7 :
It is the way you are cooking and what you are giving him to eat that has given him high cholesterol, and organic food isn't going to solve that. You need to study what are low cholesterol recipes for the improvement of diet for the whole family

Is a high level of oxidation in food good for your health

Is a high level of oxidation in food good for your health?
I read my sesame oil carton and it said that it has a high level of oxidation in it. I know that oxidation has to do something with fats/lipids but what is it and is it good for your health? Thanks!

Which is the best food for good health of my parakeets

Which is the best food for good health of my parakeets?
Got two parakeets who are almost 11years old. I give them fruits and sunflower seeds etc. I need to know apart from this which kind of seeds are more healthy so that their green feathers look fresh and nice?

I give mine a Gourmet Hagen mix for budgies (white bag at the pet store or check on their site), that's mixed with their cockatiel version of the same brand (to make feeding time easier for me). I also offer them pellets although they hardly touch them. Hard boiled egg that's been mashed together with shell is excellent nutrition for birds feathers, and they love it. I boil one egg every few days and there's enough for my 2 budgies and cockatiel to share for two days, keep unused egg in a plastic container in the fridge of course. Sprinkle a little millet on top the first time you offer it and it won't take long for them to catch on.
2 :
Kaytee fortified parakeet food or Zupreem if you can find it. I work in a pet shop and that is the brand that we use and recommend to everybody that comes in and buys a bird from us.

Is there something from the health food store to help wtih my father's knee pain

Is there something from the health food store to help wtih my father's knee pain?
He has Parkinsons disease and the doctor says this is a normal symptom. The pain relief rubs seem to have minimal effect. How about Flaxin (sp?) ? I heard it on "Duke and the Doctor" and it is suppose to help with joint pain.

THIS ISN'T FROM THE HEALTH FOOD STORE BUT TYLENOL PM AT NIGHT REALLY HELPS. ALSO PAIN PATCHES FROM THE DRUG STORE. THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE AND SOME HAVE THE SEAL OF GOOD HOUSEKEEPING GUARANTEE ON THEM
2 :
I would have him check with his doctor but fish oil or anything with omega 3's and your EFA's (essential fatty acids) like flax seed or borage seed oil can really help with join lubrication and I believe many other functions of the body. I do think that fish oil has some type of blood thinning properties though so that is why I would check with the doctor. Also look into the homeopathic medicines. These medicines are usually wonderful for this kind of thing and rarely interact with other drugs. Also massage and acupuncture can really help these symptoms as well and if he is open to it, energy work like Reiki or cranial sacral therapy could have some wonderful benefits overall for him as well.

does your father use artificial sweetenes at all? diet drinks, chewing gum, equal, nutrasweet, splenda etc?

Why is fast food not the same as restaurant food in terms of health

Why is fast food not the same as restaurant food in terms of health?
For those that don't eat fast food because it's unhealthy, do you eat at restaurants? If so, how is that food different from fast food? I'm not saying it isn't, I just want to know. If there is any food from a restaurant that would be just as bad as fast food, what factor decides if its too unhealthy to eat? (with fast food being the standard as too unhealthy to eat) Also, what makes food cooked at home healthier than fast food? What factors decide whether the food cooked at home is relatively healthy or unhealthy?

1. Fast food uses a lot of preservatives in order to keep it from spoiling. All those preservatives are not good for you. 2. Fast food often used processed food, which has been link to cancer. Not all processed food is bad. 3. Fast food often means deep fried, and all that fat can't be good for you. Restaurant foods are somewhat healthier than fast foods because the food is prepared fresh when you order it. The food tend to have less preservatives, and they're usually not processed. Hopefully the oil isn't reused over and over again. Once oil reaches past it's smoking point, it becomes bad to your health. Homemade food is usually healthier because you control what goes in it. If you don't want to use MSG, you don't have to. If you want to use less salt, you can. If you want to use olive oil instead of lard, you can.

the yhave to ad alot of stuff to preserve stuff in mass quanitieis to get i tothe restuarnts
3 :
All the junk that the fast food places serve has been deep fried, so they can get it to u quicker. They all put a ton of stuff in the food to keep it from spoiling.

What is a good natural/fresh dog food recipe for optimal health

What is a good natural/fresh dog food recipe for optimal health?
I have two dogs that I am considering feeding a natural/fresh food diet rather than store bought dog food but have no idea how to start. I want them to get all the appropriate nutrients and need to know appropriate serving sizes. One of the boys is a 105lb. Chocolate Lab. The other is a 52lb. Lab/Saluki mix. I would really appreciate answers from vetrinarians or other dog care professional who are familiar with the nutritional needs of these breeds.

I use Doctor Harvey's and Bravo Raw patties. The information is on the websites.

Good choice! RAW or BARF diets are extremely healthy, excellent alternates to store brand foods. I myself can't afford a daily regimen of raw feedings, so I alternate between RAW and Canidae ALS [I have seven dogs plus 12+ fosters, daily RAW isn't fathomable!]. I'll link you to the natural source website so you can do a bit of research for yourself. :) http://www.rawdietfordogs.net/

i'm not an expert but i know that by you feeding them "table food" their going to have to be a lot more active and their poop is going to really be funky......i'd prefer eukanuba indoor formula. sorry to discourage you.

The ultimate food would be a whole carcass but a 'frankenprey' diet of meat, meaty bones and organs is nearly as good. I have been raw feeding for several years and my animals eat a variety of foods; beef, lamb, chicken, fish (fresh and tinned), goat, pork, kangaroo etc. If you aim to feed about 2/3 muscle/meat (including heart) and the rest a combination of meaty bones and organs like brains, liver and kidney over the course of a week or two then your dogs (ALL BREEDS) will get all the nutrients they need. The only supplement you need to use is fish body oil if you can't get pasture raised meats. The general guide is to either feed 15-25% of the dog's body weight a week or 2-3% a day. I would start your lab on about 2.5 lbs and the mix on about 1.25 (this is about 2.5%) adjust these amounts up or down based on the appearance of your dogs. "Dogs are Carnivores" An article clearly explaining the physiological reasons behind this classification and the effects of feeding inappropriate foods http://www.thewholedog.org/artcarnivores… A feeding guide published by Dr Tom Lonsdale, a vet who advocates raw feeding and has been widely published http://www.rawmeatybones.com/diet/exp-di… A website debunking some of the many myths regarding raw feeding and bones. http://rawfed.com/myths

The word 'natural' means absolutely nothing. And regulations for the word 'organic' is being loosened. It's great to hear from someone concerned about their dogs' nutrition!
