Are raw cashews dangerous, like the ones you buy in the health food store?
I have been eating them for months w/ no problems but someone just told me that they should not be eaten raw. He specified that they should not be eaten while harvesting. So I am wondering if out of the garden raw is the same as raw in the health food store?

Every so often, a well-meaning Co-op customer will alert us to the information that raw cashews are toxic. While it is true that in their natural state, the cashew nut or kernel is encased in a shell that contains caustic oils, these oils are extracted from the shell and used industrially. Even “raw” cashews are processed to remove this oil, and so are safe to eat. People who are allergic to cashews cannot eat them at all, cooked or not. Cooking does not affect allergens and does not render food safe for someone with a true allergy.

Raw cashews are not bad for you. But I find that toasting them helps to enhance the flavors. :)

Raw nuts are fine, just eat a handful.... everything in moderation. Cashews have been known to be high cholesterol, so many people tend to label them as bad, but its not BAD cholesterol, its GOOD cholesterol, but again, moderation is key.
