Is it ok to take digestive enzymes(like from the health food store) when on humalog?
my son was diagnosed type 1 diabetes he is 16.his grandmother would like to put him on digestive enzymes from the health food store. will it react with the humalog insulin in any way?

It shouldn't because the digestive enzymes work in the gut, not the bloodstream like the insulin. Still, you have to know that no one has done studies on this combination. Be more mindful than usual in monitoring blood sugar levels if you try this combination.

Unless there is something that you are not telling me so-called 'digestive enzymes' will be of no benefit. They also will have no effect on Humalog or any other insulin. They are probably harmless but products sold through health food stores are not required to meet any government standards for purity or potency. They are not even required to have an active ingredient. This means that the package may say 'digestive enzymes' but there may be no digestive enzymes in the pill. If your grandmother believes that your son should be on digestive enzymes I would prefer that these are prescribed by your physician. At least that way you will know what your son is actually taking.
