I am trying to wean myself off Cymbalta and wondered if eventually I could use seratonin to achieve similar but less comprehensive results.

You should just stop it without consuling the doctor first as it can c ause some bad withdrawls!! you can only get products for seritonin in health food shops.. such as 5htp 5-HTP and serotonin are natural chemicals produced by our bodies to help regulate appetite, mood, sexual desire, sleep patterns and stress levels. The short answer is no. Serotonin is a naturally occuring brain chemical that is increased by a group of prescription only drugs called SSRI's (serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors) which block the exit drain of serotonin in your brain - the effect of which is a raising of available serotonin and a resulting increase in mood and happiness. Cymbalta actually works on both serotonin and norepinepherine reuptake - so even taking a serotonin drug alone may not have the same effect. You would save money as the serotonin drugs are often available as generics (Prozac is a good example (called fluoxetine in its generic form) and your co-payment would only be about $ 10 instead of the likely 35 - 50 you are paying for Cymbalta.
