Our next equation is $3.6x + $4.8y = $120 ; sub our value of 'y' which we know in terms of 'x' so that 'x' is the only variable 3.6x + 4.8(30-x) = 120 3.6x + 144 - 4.8x = 120 1.2x = 24 x = 20 So if x (oatmeal) weighs 20 pounds, the y (bran) must be 10 pounds, since they add to 30. Let's check it against the prices, which we know must add to $120. $3.6x + $4.8y = $120 $3.6*20 + $4.8*10 = $120 $72 + $48 = $120 $120 = $120 Yep
