There are two unknowns, so we'll need two equations. If we say 'x' is the weight of the oatmeal, and 'y' is the weight of the bran, then x + y = 30lb ; so y = 30lb - x This problem throws a harmless trick in by saying the end mixture is 30lbs and sells for $4 per lb. That means the final mixture sells for $120 for the whole 30lb bag. Our next equation is $3.6x + $4.8y = $120 ; sub our value of 'y' which we know in terms of 'x' so that 'x' is the only variable 3.6x + 4.8(30-x) = 120 3.6x + 144 - 4.8x = 120 1.2x = 24 x = 20 So if x (oatmeal) weighs 20 pounds, the y (bran) must be 10 pounds, since they add to 30. Let's check it against the prices, which we know must add to $120. $3.6x + $4.8y = $120 $3.6*20 + $4.8*10 = $120 $72 + $48 = $120 $120 = $120 Yep
