Why don't we have Universal Grocery Coverage instead of Universal Health Care? Is food not more important

Why don't we have Universal Grocery Coverage instead of Universal Health Care? Is food not more important?
I don't understand why liberals have chosen health insurance as the great necessary thing of our time. Are there not things more essential to life, such as clean water, food, shelter, clothing, etc? Why is it that they have chosen to pursue fascism and socialism on this issue that's kind of far down the line of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? Or is it just that they are starting here and will socialize everything after-the-fact based upon my own logic here? God, liberals are stupid. Killing the golden goose of America.

You need only your third paragraph. BTW, they started in 1965. It's called Medicare, and it was passed on a promise that by 1990 it would only cost $9B (actual cost $67B). Once you control 15-20% of the economy, the rest gets easier.

I applaud you on your insight. Of course: 1. There already is a grocery coverage plan - it is called food stamps. 2. And they already have such government agencies as the FDA and the EPA to make sure that water is clean and food not poisonous. 3. As for the golden goose, are you referring the huge subsidies the government gave the railroads? "From 1850-1871, the railroads received more than 175 million acres (708,000 km²) of public land - an area more than one tenth of the whole United States and larger than Texas." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Railway_Acts Or are you referring all the wars the government fought on behalf of United Fruit? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Wars Or the other subsidies the U.S. government has given to big corporations over the centuries? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_welfare http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=8230 http://www.essential.org/features/corporatesocialism.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/adrienne-birecree/conservative-tax-policy-i_b_137836.html 4. As for "socialism", it was Richard Nixon, a Republican president, who imposed wage and price controls. So if you think the U.S. was a free market economy until Obama got elected, you'd better learn a bit more about American History. There is a reason all developed economies and most other economies are mixed economies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_economy and that's because pure economies, whether socialist or free-market just don't deliver
